“Tackling global sustainability challenges together” during First Sem. 2021-2022
August 10, 2021
Sustainability and development have been interlinked for a long time. During the last two decades, a new paradigm of sustainable production has been developed which delinks the production from negative effects on the environment. However, the adoption of sustainable production is a big challenge in developing as well as developed countries.
The Joint Indo-German project “Academy towards Sustainability in Engineering, Education and Entrepreneurship (JInGAS)” deepens the long-standing cooperation of BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig. Sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the project develops joint education formats on the topics of sustainability and Industry 4.0 in engineering as well as education and entrepreneurship. Over the project duration of 4 years (Jan 2020 – December 2023), the exchange of students will be promoted.
The Seminar: Tackling global challenges together!Whether global pandemic or climate change, the challenges of our time can only be overcome together, from October 2021 to February 2021 students from BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig will work in binational teams on various concepts and technical applications in the context of Sustainable Manufacturing and Industry 4.0.
Five teams of four students each (two Indian and two German) will work virtually together (we are exploring the possibility of Indian students visit to Germany) on the following topics: Data-driven business models for more sustainable user behavior, Blockchain for sustainable and transparent supply chains, Decision support for decentralized production locations for sustainable production and supply chains, Application of mixed reality technique for real-time defect/ Predictive quality assessment for 3D printed product, Additive manufacturing for sustainable product design.
The learning infrastructure at BITS Pilani and the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology at TU Braunschweig, including various technical devices is available for the implementation and testing of the ideas.
The teamwork is the central element of the seminar. It will be embedded in a set of activities. Team building activities will strengthen teamwork and cultural understanding. In a regular meeting, called “Chai and coffee break session “, the groups will have the chance to present their interim results to the others and receive feedback. Results will be presented by each group in February 2021.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this year seminar will be held in the virtual mode in 2021. However, we are exploring the visit of Indian students, who are vaccinated, to Germany for two weeks). BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig will provide comprehensive digital infrastructure to enable a successful exchange of the participants.
Applications are invited from undergraduate/postgraduate/PhD students from Manufacturing, Mechanical, Mathematics, Chemical, Computer Science, EEE, MBA to form the BITS Pilani team. Students who are interested in working on this project are invited to submit a CV of one page and a letter of motivation (max. 500 words) as single PDF to Mr. Rishi Kumar (igcsm@pilani.bits-pilani.ac.in). The letter of motivation should state the three preferred topics out of the five themes presented below with the following details before August 25, 2021, 5 pm. Do not forget to write BITS Id, mobile no., and Email id. Incomplete forms will be rejected.
