Invitation for Participation in ‘BIOPACKATHON 2026– Biodegradable Packaging Solution Challenge for Pan Masala & Gut
Respected Madam/Sir,
As you are already aware that widespread use of small, single-use sachets for pan masala and gutkha has emerged as a serious environmental concern in India. Typically made from multi-layered laminates, these sachets are difficult to collect, segregate, recycle, or dispose of in an environmentally sound manner, leading to littering, soil pollution, blocked drainage systems, and persistent waste in terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
In this context, and in view of the growing emphasis on sustainable and environmentally responsible packaging, the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), Government of India, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), is organizing “BIOPACKATHON 2026 – Biodegradable Packaging Solution Challenge for Pan Masala & Gutkha Sachets.”
The BIOPACKATHON aims to bring together innovators, researchers, start-ups, academic institutions, research organizations and industry stakeholders to identify prototype-ready or already developed next-generation biodegradable packaging materials and formats that are safe, scalable and environmentally benign.
Participation in the hackathon is open to individuals as well as teams. Eligible participants may include students, researchers, faculty members, technologists, start-ups, innovators and industry professionals, either independently or as multidisciplinary teams.
The hackathon will be conducted through a structured evaluation process involving screening of submissions, shortlisting of proposals and final presentations before an assessment board.
The registration for the hackathon will start on 25 March 2026 and the last date for registration/solution submission will be 24 April 2026.
In this regard, your esteemed institution is kindly requested to circulate this invitation among students, faculty members, researchers and innovators and encourage their active participation in this national initiative. It is also requested that the information may kindly be disseminated through appropriate communication channels for wider outreach across the institution ecosystem.
